Issue No. 187 · The Curators Vol. VII · Winter Programme 2026

Volume VII · The Editorial Team

The Curators.

Behind every title on 1MOV sits a person — a programmer, a restorer, a working critic — who chose it. Twenty-two of them. Nine engineers in the lab. One quiet conviction: cinema worth watching is cinema worth choosing by hand.

— The Editorial Department

Thirty-one faces. One library of 18,400 films.

The largest independent programming staff in streaming — drawn from Sundance, Cannes, Venice, Berlinale, IDFA, and the restoration halls of the Library of Congress. Below: a small selection from the desk.

Inside The Screening Room

A selection of nine from a team of thirty-one — the remaining programmers, restoration engineers, and editorial assistants work below the frame, choosing what you watch next.

— Lead Curators

The four who read the scripts.

A 250,000-title submission inbox filters down to roughly twelve titles a week. These are the four people who make the final cut.

Anika Sølver, Editor-in-Chief of 1MOV

Editor-in-Chief

Anika Sølver

Former TIFF programmer · Variety's 10 Tastemakers Shaping Cinema (2025) · 14 years in curation

Anika built 1MOV's house style from a one-room office above a Brooklyn bakery in 2017. She reads every festival dispatch from Cannes, Berlin, and Locarno by hand and personally signs off on the weekly programme. Born in Tromsø, raised between Reykjavík and Toronto. She still keeps a 16mm print of Mirror on a shelf above her desk.

Currently obsessed with — The lost three-hour cut of Miklós Jancsó's Red Psalm our restoration team just finished, plus everything Bo Widerberg ever shot on 35mm.

Daniel Reyes, Co-founder and Head of Acquisitions

Co-founder · Head of Acquisitions

Daniel Reyes

Former MUBI curator · Founded 1MOV in 2017 with Anika · Negotiates 67 festival partnerships

Daniel's Rolodex is the company's. He flew to Teheran, Lagos, and Hanoi in 2024 alone, sealing direct licensing with filmmakers and estates that other platforms couldn't reach. He reads Spanish, Portuguese, and French criticism daily.

Currently obsessed with — Lisandro Alonso's unreleased short, plus a 1969 Yemeni feature our Beirut team is tracking down.

Mei Tan, Senior Programmer, Asian Cinema

Senior Programmer · Pan-Asian Cinema

Mei Tan

Ex-Sundance programmer · 11 years in Asian specialty cinema · Trilingual in Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese

Mei runs the world's most-watched Hong Kong Second Wave retrospective on our platform. She spent four years at the Hong Kong Film Archive before joining 1MOV in 2019 and still flies to Busan every autumn for the festival.

Currently obsessed with — Two Taiwanese documentaries about disappearing fishing villages, plus a long-lost Ann Hui short from 1979.

Aisha Okonkwo, Lead Restoration Engineer

Lead Restoration Engineer · 4K HDR

Aisha Okonkwo

Trained at the Cinematheque Francaise · Lead engineer on 2,100 HDR restorations · Holds a patent on grain-preserving upscaling

Aisha leads the nine-person lab in Brooklyn that physically re-scans nitrate and acetate prints for streaming. Her team rarely sleeps in early October. When she's not in the lab, she's teaching film preservation at NYU Tisch.

Currently obsessed with — Reconstructing the lost color of a 1957 Sudanese feature found in a Cairo warehouse last spring.

— From the Editor-in-Chief

“A streaming service that doesn't have a person choosing what to put on next isn't a cinema — it's a vending machine. Every title on 1MOV passed through at least one human hand before it reached yours. That hand had a bad day at the office, fell in love at a film festival, and read the director's letters to the producer. That taste is the product.”
